Dr. Michael Tieland serves as an Associate Professor of Nutrition Science at the Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia. He received his training in nutrition and exercise physiology at Wageningen and Maastricht University in the Netherlands, followed by a Ph.D. and postdoctoral research at Wageningen University, where his focus was on the interaction of dietary protein intake, physical activity, and healthy aging. He transitioned to the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences to translate his nutrition (mainly protein) and physical activity research findings into tangible practices for older adults.

During his academic career, Dr. Tieland has conducted >20 randomized controlled trials and implementation studies addressing various aspects of nutrition and physical activity for older adults. His research has covered a range of settings and conditions, including primary care, hospitals, nursing homes, and specific health issues such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, frailty, and sarcopenia. He has authored >70 research articles (H-index of 33) and four book chapters.

In addition to his research activities, Dr. Tieland is actively involved in knowledge dissemination, having conducted over 250 public speaking sessions and workshops for healthcare professionals. He has served on a range of national and international committees and has supervised 10 PhD and >200 MSc/BSc students.
