Emeritus Professor of Human Nutrition
University of Sydney

Brand-Miller is Emeritus Professor of Human Nutrition at the University of Sydney. She has researched the role of the glycemic index (GI) in health and disease and transformed the way carbohydrate foods are considered by scientists, physicians and consumers.  She is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, the Nutrition Society of Australia and the Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology. Her research and education efforts have been recognised in several major awards, including Officer of the Order of Australia. Jennie demonstrated that the adverse effects of hyperglycemia apply to obesity and cardiovascular disease, not just diabetes. Her work has led to significant changes in nutrition recommendations for people with diabetes, including those of the American Diabetes Association and Diabetes UK.  By establishing international standards and testing services for industry and compiling reliable databases, she facilitated epidemiological, agricultural and industrial research application of the GI around the world. By writing books and launching a food labelling program, she translated new knowledge into actions that helped millions of individuals to adopt healthier diets. Jennie went gradually deaf from her teenage years onwards and now has bilateral cochlear implants. She believes that more adults should be encouraged to have cochlear implantation to give them the best quality of life in their senior years.
