chiara murgia
Senior Lecturer, Human Nutrition
The University of Melbourne
Chiara Murgia holds a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology from Italy and moved to Australia in early 2014. She is based in the Faculty of Science at The University of Melbourne, where she contributed to developing the Human Nutrition major and established a research program focused on applying -omic and digital data in personalised and precision nutrition.
Before relocating to Australia, Chiara spent nearly 15 years at the Italian Institute for Food and Nutrition in Rome, where she led several projects investigating the molecular mechanisms of micronutrient activity and the role of genetics in shaping dietary requirements.
Her research explores how dietary components influence human physiology in both health and disease. She has used cell culture models to study the effects of marginal micronutrient deficiencies on gut function and applies genome-wide approaches to understand individual variability in responses to obesity treatments. Integrating molecular, physiological, and personalised nutrition perspectives, her work aims to advance understanding of nutrient–health interactions.
Chiara is also the Co-Chair of the Nutrition Society of Australia’s Special Interest Group on Personalised and Precision Nutrition.
